WHY it’s so important to read food labels!

Hi this is Neily on Nutrition. I was in
one of those big box technology stores not long ago and you know you’re
standing in line and there are just rows and rows of point of purchase items. They’re meant for you to buy them. Impulse type buys. Well I’m standing
there and there’s a gentleman in front of me what looked like a father daughter
probably had absolutely no intention of buying this but he did. He ended up
picking out this energy mix that was just there amongst lots of other
things. He picked up you know probably one of the healthier things that was
there. So we picked this up and I could just imagine that he might have driven
home with his daughter maybe opened it up and had a few handfuls of that. So I couldn’t help getting up there and picking up one myself and
looking at it and thinking oh this would make a good video. But looking at it and
talking about portions. So I picked up the package and I looked – first thing you
want to look at of course is what is a portion and in this case it’s one
quarter of a cup. I’ll show you what that looks like in just a minute but a
quarter of a cup is a portion. Then you want to look at
well how many servings are in the package. That’s the second thing you want
to look at. No this is not one serving although for some people it might be. So
looking at the number of servings how many do you think are in this package? 10?
20? 30? There are 28 servings in this package. Twenty-eight at
120 calories each. I’ll do the math for you. 3,360 calories. Not that you would eat the whole thing
although somebody might but just a couple of handfuls can really add up to
somebody’s calorie budget for the day. It might be healthier calories and
something else and a chocolate bar or something but still can really add up. What does a quarter of a cup look like? Well here’s a quarter of a cup just
roughly about a handful – for what doesn’t fall on the floor – about quarter of a cup
there and a smaller package like this so a little bit more reasonable but
still 11 serving in this package here. Each of the quarter
of a cup this actually has 150 calories per serving. 1,650 calories for the bag. I think I actually picked this one up at
Walgreen’s. And then another package which you might easily just look at and I
think this is the smallest one that I could get. This is a smallest package I
could get. How many servings in this this. Is it one serving. No not one serving
it’s six servings. Six at 120 calorie 720 calories for this
package here. So the point is that you really have to be careful of what
you’re buying – not that they’re bad foods but the portions can really get out of
control. So read your label look at the portion size. How many portions are in
the package and then eat appropriately. What I recommend is don’t open up the
package until you get home and then use something like these little snack baggies
– these are great for portioning them out and then you’ve got your budget
for the day. So anyway watch your portions and thanks
for watching the Neily on Nutrition and we’ll see you the next video.
